Natural heritage
The Varaždin region is famous for its natural environment. Among the most interesting examples of this are the protected forest-parks of Trakošćan and the Drava, the second of which almost extends as far as the city of Varaždin.

The caves at Vindija and Mačkova spilja, are a silent witness to man's 1000-year presence in the area and are major sites of geological and palaeontological interest. Another such site is Gaveznica - Kameni Vrh, the only example of a fossil volcano in Croatia, where semi-precious stones may be found.

However, many of the best nature-sites are the parks around historic manor-houses, such as Maruševec, Bajnski Dvori, Klenovnik, Novi Marof, Šaulovec, and Veliki Bukovec which together constitute much of the region’s cultural heritage.

The Opeka Arboretum and the Varaždin cemetry are among the most attractive sites currently protected.
